Clueless Cases (Chapter 3): The Meeting

Cleo hurried to the front door as she heard the doorbell. She opened it to find the Furling twins and Ivy, standing - and panting - right there in front of her. "What are you guys doing here?" she asked instantly, without a polite greeting or a sunny smile."If my brother called for a meeting or homework discussion, then I should be the first one to know." And she didn't, clearly shown by her ocean blue nightdress and a pair of fluffy white bunny bedroom slippers. Her black hair was cascaded over her shoulders, tangled at every tip.

Ivy told Cleo to get ready and tell her brother the same thing. "I've got news," she whispered.

Surprisingly, Cleo understood Ivy's orders quicker than Tyler and Kevin did, although she's still eight - four years younger than the others. She didn't wait to ask questions and instead, rushed inside and up the flight of stairs immediately. As soon as Cleo disappeared inside the house, Ivy, Kevin and Tyler led themselves in without anyone letting them. They didn't have to ask anyone where they should go since they already know the twists and turns of the house. They finally arrived at their destination, the living room. The three children settled themselves on a soft red couch, waiting for Cliff and Cleo to call them upstairs.

While looking around the living room for any changes (which there aren't), something caught Ivy's eye. It was a pile of books right next to the coffee table in front of her. She rested her eyes on one of them, which she had borrowed from Cleo recently and loved it so much! Ivy begged Cleo to let her keep that book as her own and used many begging methods (including trying to steal it, but failed shortly after breaking in) but they were no use. She gave up eventually and tried to forget about it. The book was entitled "Deep Secrets" and the reason she wanted it so much was because the book was all about mind-bending adventures, mysterious puzzles and other brain teasers that was solved and experienced by three school girls. Ivy had always wanted her life to be just like the book.

Ivy averted her eyes from the book as she heard Cleo calling,"Guys, we're ready!" She and the twins climbed the flight of stairs and went into Cliff's neat and tidy room occupied by a set of furnitures. Cliff was pretty neat himself. He was wearing his usual black T-shirt under a white labcoat, a pair of black trousers, black-rimmed spectacles and a pair of black loafers worn over school socks.

On the other hand Cleo looked very sunny in a frilly yellow sundress with sunflower and butterfly patterns, her straight her tied into bunches. A pair of yellow moccasins matched her cheerful dress and she finally wore a bright refreshing smile.

Cliff sat on the floor against the side of his bed and the others made a circle there with him. He tucked his hand under the thick brown valance of his bed and pulled his notebook out. He took a pen out of the inside pocket of his labcoat as Tyler took out two notebooks - blue and green - and two pens - blue and green - for his brother and himself from their blue satchel. Cleo had taken her laptop from her room to record the meeting and sat beside Ivy to share together with her.

Before they could even start the meeting, Cliff heard a soft grumbling sound.

"Um," Cleo said,"can we have breakfast first?" Everone agreed instantly for they were as hungry as Cleo right then. Ivy and Cleo went to the kitchen to get some bread and butter. Tyler said tea would be the most elegant drink, but everyone agreed on lemonade. He didn't even feel a bit offended and instead, requested lemonade too. Soon after the girls left, the boys in the room talked about homework.

They all ate their breakfast as the girls brought them in. Each of them had two slices of butter-smeared bread, a glass of fresh lemonade and two slices of juicy grapefruit. They set the dishes aside after finishing their meals and started their meeting.

"Ivy," Cliff started,"what brings you the urge to hold a meeting?"

Ivy told them everything her mother had said that very morning. Everyone listened with great interest."Where do you think the scream came from?" Ivy asked when she finished.

Before anyone could answer - or even think - they heard the sound of police sirens. The children glanced at each other and looked out the window to find two police cars racing towards Dillway Lane, three rows behind Hilder street. They looked at each other in amazement, then gazed back out the window. The five children knew one thing about the scream right then - that the police cars would show the way towards it.
