Clueless Cases (Chapter 2): News!

Ivy woke up early as always the next day, admiring the yellowish red sun rays stretching across the horizon and deep in thought. She turned around as she heard a knock, and Mrs. Plyde shuffled into the room. Her mother was still in her violet silk nightdress, her hair was wild and messy, and she had black circles around her eyes, showing lack of sleep.

Ivy gaped, staring wide-eyed at her mother's unusually unkempt appearance. "Is something wrong, Mom?" she asked, a bit worried.

Mrs. Plyde sat heavily on the bed, clearly exhausted. "Did you hear it last night?" she mumbled, her wide terrified eyes glued to the wall in front of her. Her skin was as pale as her dry lips, which were quivering a bit.

Ivy could hardly hear her mother's soft voice. It was as if she was talking to herself rather than Ivy, but she could make out what she said, making her quite confused. Well, sure Mrs. Plyde was a light-sleeper and wakes up at any loud noises, but she never feels scared of them. "Heard what?" she questioned, concern shown in her expression.

Her mother's face became more terrified, looking more nauseated. "The scream," she whispered, still seeming to be hypnotized by the wall. "Th-there was a scream... last night." Ivy knew she doesn't like to go outside late at night, so she assumed she had sat traumatically on the bed, trying to calm herself down. "I only had two hours of sleep," she murmured. Her eyelids drooped over her eyes.

Of course, Ivy became curious. Who screams in the middle of the night? Unless... "Mom, do you know who it might be?" she asked. But when she turned around, her mother was already snoozing and drifting away to the land of dreams.

Ivy wanted to tell her friends about this. They probably knew about it, but she's going anyway. Quietly, she changed into a yellow T-shirt and a pair of black jeans. Her wavy blonde hair was tied into a ponytail and her feet slipped on a pair of flip-flops. Once she's ready, she was headed to the Carrons' house.

Running a few blocks from home, she stopped midway at the Furlings' place. THis wasn't her last destination, but it doesn't hurt to tell her other friends too. WIthout giving any room for her mind to change, she knocked politely on the door.

"Who's there?" a familiar voice asked from inside the house, though Ivy was not sure which familiar voice it was.

Recalling her code name, Ivy gave it voluntarily with the password to the person on the other side. The person opened the door after confirming, and there stood the familiar green eyes, brown hair hidden under a blue baseball cap and a mischievous aura filling the air. He grinned as he saw Ivy, and his twin appeared behind him, wearing the same grin.

"Oh, good morning, Ivy!" one of them said. For people who don't know them well, they can't tell them apart. But Ivy knows exactly who is who.

Ignoring his greeting, Ivy hastily said, "I've got news." She paused, having a little argument with herself whether to tell them or go to others first. Finally, she decided the news could wait a little longer. "Let's go to Cliff's to hold a meeting."

The twins were a bit too slow, exchanging confused glances at first, but they caught the message.

"Kevin," the twin at the door said to his brother behind him,"get the satchel."

"Blue or red?" his brother replied as he climbed up the first few steps of  the stairs.

He thought for a moment, and at last said, "Both."

"Actually, Tyler," Ivy protested,"don't bring the red one." She raised a finger as if to warn him.

"Heard that?" Tyler called to Kevin, not feeling at all threatened. Kevin was already upstairs and gave a quick "okay" before starting his search for the satchel.

A few minutes later, Ivy, Kevin and Tyler were running down the road towards West Bay, which is near to the Carrons'. Ivy hoped they would be up by now, or at least if they could wake them up.
